Mentorship Program

Sober Black Girls Club is now connecting newly sober girls, women, and nonbinary people with mentors who have experience in sobriety and recovery through our mentorship program.

Mentee Eligibility
To participate in this program, we are asking prospective mentees to:
(1) Have seven (7) or more days in sobriety at the time their application is submitted.
(2) Have an intention to remain sober.
(3) Attend three (3) or more SBGC meetings within the last 30 (thirty) days.

Prospective Mentors
If you have the time and capacity, please consider becoming a mentor. While no strict rules govern the program, mentors and mentees should attempt to meet or correspond via telephone or email at least once a week.

A SBGC mentor is not a therapist. While an exemplary mentor will help advise their mentee through tough situations like cravings and interpersonal conflict, it’s important not to treat a mentor like a shrink. The focus of the mentorship relationship should be on finding what practices work for the mentee and making progress in their recovery. While many of us do need a therapist or a therapist-like person in our lives, it’s not the role of a SBGC mentor. Learn more about the role of a SBGC mentor below.

A SBGC Mentor:
(1) Has about a year in sobriety and is comfortable and confident about it.
(2) Has a friendly demeanor.
(3) Demonstrates strong communication skills.
(4) Is open-minded.
(5) Respects privacy and confidentiality.
(6) Is motivated by a desire to help others.

A SBGC Mentor Can:
(1) Offer advice about how to handle recovery challenges based on their personal experiences.
(2) Attend SBGC support meetings (and/or recovery-based meetings) with their mentee.
(3) Encourage their mentee to keep working towards their sobriety and provide a source of accountability.
(4) Connect their mentee to resources in the community that may be of assistance.
(5) Help their mentee practice relapse prevention strategies.
